The
Humanitarian Network
Our Purpose ..To Connect Resources with Projects.
|
|
Project
HOPE is preparing to engage with the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force on
multiple humanitarian missions during 2010, providing direct medical care and
health education to communities in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and
Southeast Asia. These missions will provide a range of opportunities for Rotary
Clubs and other supporters of the Humanitarian Network to participate in this
historic global medical outreach initiative. |
|
2010 Navy and AF Missions
THN is most interested in
providing Mission Support and Collaborative assistance. |
|
The 2010 Humanitarian Mission

U.S. Navy missions will take place throughout the year, providing care to
Liberia, Ghana, South Africa, Mozambique and Tanzania
·
SOUTHEAST ASIA
(Navy): From May to August, the USNS Mercy will provide care to Vietnam,
Cambodia, East Timor and Indonesia
·
SOUTHEAST ASIA
(Air Force): From February to September, land-based missions will provide care
to Vietnam, Cambodia, Bangladesh and East Timor
We will
focus on this area
·
LATIN AMERICA/CARRIBEAN:
From July to November, a Navy mission will provide care to Haiti, the Dominican
Republic, Antigua, Colombia, Panama, Nicaragua and El Salvador
|
|
Opportunities to Participate
WE are
interested in developing and implementing the following programs. |
|
·
VOLUNTEER: Since 2005, Project
HOPE has provided more than 800 volunteers to support 16 Navy and Air Force
humanitarian missions – and HOPE will do so again in 2010. Typical rotations
are 2-3 weeks. Most volunteer opportunities are for physicians, nurses,
pharmacists and other healthcare professionals. (Project HOPE volunteers work
alongside their military counterparts, delivering medical care and health
education.) On a more limited basis, there are also some non-medical volunteer
opportunities (e.g., communications and public affairs specialist). Individuals
interested in volunteering can register in HOPE’s volunteer database at
http://www.projecthope.org/joinhope/volunteer.asp.
Candidates are contacted when pre-mission staffing begins.
|
|
SPONSOR A
VOLUNTEER: Volunteers are asked to pay for their own airline tickets, or
identify a group to underwrite this cost – but Project HOPE bears the
transportation costs for those who cannot afford to do so. HOPE also absorbs
the cost of recruiting,
orienting, communicating with and managing volunteers, as well as other costs
associated with planning and implementing the missions. Groups interested in
sponsoring an individual volunteer can do so for a $5,000 contribution. The
designated volunteer will provide photographs and regular electronic
communications to the sponsoring group during and after the mission. |
|
SPONSOR A MISSION OR A COUNTRY: Clubs or districts may be interested in pooling
their resources to sponsor a future mission – or a particular country within a
mission schedule. HOPE’s direct cost for conducting a single volunteer mission
is in the $350,000 range, but special sponsorship arrangements can be
negotiated. Project HOPE is willing and eager to work with potential sponsoring
groups – e,g,, co-hosting an event, providing speakers, meeting with
constituents or arranging Navy ship tours – to achieve their goals. Mission or
Country sponsors can be recognized on the Project HOPE website and at in-country
events during the mission. |

The Humanitarian Network and
its members would like a collaborative relationship with Project Hope
International. The purpose of the relationship would be to impact the
delivery of humanitarian aid and services. The Humanitarian Network
would link Project Hope with Service Clubs, The NGBIA (Military),
NGOs, and other resources in select areas of the world. |
|
Here are
several areas of interest for collaborative activities. |
|
Long Term Plans for Haiti
THN will
continue to work with service clubs, the military, and others to impact
the rebuilding of Haiti. Here are several areas of high interest. |
|
Rehabilitation Clinics Haiti
We will
deploy the first Rehabilitation in April 2010. It will be at a compound
near Pignon. (Hosean Compound). This is the first of several that are
planned. We seek the support of Project Hope to assist with staffing it
with rehabilitation staff that can train locals to provide these
services. |
|
Volunteers and Program Support for Rehab Clinics
THN seeks
assistance to staff this program and develop long term relationships
with institutions that can continue to assist in staffing and training
local people to provide services. |
|
Shelter, Safe Water, and Sanitation for your Volunteers
THN has a
number of resources to insure the health and safety of staff and
volunteers during deployments to Haiti. |
|
 |
|
Shelter, Safe Water, and Sanitation
We are also
involved in a number of projects that provide planned communities family
homes, safe water systems, and community sanitation facilities.
Our solutions are coordinated with service club people from the region
that understand the rebuilding requirements. |
|
Lessons learned from Haiti that impact future events
We
were asked to provide a report to the military. Copies available upon
request. The main lesson was that having resources ready to deploy is
most important. Plus having a way to coordinate the efforts of all via
online databases and communications is essential. THN solutions are
available. |
|
MASH Units
Mobile medical treatment units need to be ready and
provided. One of the projects that we have undertaken is to developed
and deploy these unit. They may be used for domestic incidents, as well
for overseas incidents. They may be prepositioned and/or can be transported via military assets.
|
|
Software for Event
Management and Coordination
We have developed an easy-to-use web-based
collaboration system that helps cooperating agencies share and receive
information during the response to emergency incidents. (Beta)
